In his “This Week in History” columns, West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyer Kelly V. Landers recalls events of significance that occurred this week in past years.

On January 19, Happy Martin Luther King Day!

On January 20, 1801 President Adams nominates John Marshall for Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

On January 20, 1920 the American Civil Liberties Union was founded.

On January 20, 1981 52 American hostages held in Iran were released moments after Ronald Reagan took office as president.

On January 21, 1977 President Jimmy Carter pardoned most Vietnam War draft evaders.

On January 22, 1973 the US Supreme Court handed down its landmark Roe v. Wade decision, legalizing abortion.

Women's Rights

By 1970, approximately a third of the million women having illegal abortions each year had to be hospitalized for complications. The women’s liberation movement of the 1960s and ’70s reached its peak when women won the right to choose — as the Supreme Court legalized abortion in the 1973 Roe v. Wade case.
