In his “This Week in History” columns, West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyer Kelly V. Landers recalls events of significance that occurred this week in past years.

On January 5, 1903, in Lone Wolf v. Hichcock, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Congress had the authority to unilaterally disregard terms of treaties with Native American tribes.

On January 5, 1989, Virginia governor pardoned David Vasquez, the first DNA exoneration in the United States.

On January 6, 1994, figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by a man with a crowbar.  The assault was revealed to have been arranged by rival Tonya Harding.

On January 7, 1789, the first U.S. presidential election was held.

On January 9, 2007, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveils the iPhone.
