In his “This Week in History” columns, West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyer Kelly V. Landers recalls events of significance that occurred this week in past years.

This Week in History!

On January 11, 1935 Amelia Earhart starts her solo flight from Hawaii to California, the first woman to do so.

On January 12, 1991 the US Congress votes to authorize military force to expel Iraq from Kuwait.

On January 14, 2009 An airliner taking off from New York hits a  flock of geese, disabling both engines.  Pilot Chesley Sullenberger ditches the plane in the Hudson River, and all aboard survive.

On January 15, 1919 a molasses tank in Boston bursts, and two million gallons of molasses sweeps through the streets, killing 21, testing the cliche “slow as molasses in January.”

1967-1st Super Bowl

On January 15, 1967 the first Superbowl football game was played in Los Angeles.  The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.

On January 16, 1920 Prohibition began!

On January 17, 1977 “Let’d do it.”  Gary Gilmore was executed by Utah firing squad.
