On September 12, 1977, South African anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko died in police custody, causing outrage and drawing attention to the racial struggles.
On September 16, 1974, U.S. President Gerald Ford announced an amnesty program offering pardons to Vietnam War draft evaders and deserters.
On September 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed in Philadelphia.
On September 17, 1976 NASA unveiled the firs space shuttle, Enterprise, a test craft not capable of actual orbital flight.
