West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyer Kelly V. Landers recalls events of significance that occurred this week in history.

On March 17, Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

On March 18, 1963 Gideon v. Wainwright was decided holding Assistance to Counsel is a fundamental right essential to a fair trial, thus creating the Public Defender system.   Clarence Gideon’s conviction was reversed and he was subsequently exonerated with the benefit of counsel.

On March 19, 1931 Gambling became legal in Nevada.

On March 21, 1963 the Alcatraz federal penitentiary was closed.
