HMS Bounty 1789

This Week in History – Mutiny on the Bounty

In early April 1789, Captain Bligh of the British Royal Navy left Tahiti in the Pacific and sailed to England with his crew. However on April 28th, he woke on the HMS Bounty to face a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian against the commanding officer William Bligh.  According to most accounts, the sailors were attracted by the idyllic life on the Pacific island of Tahiti and repelled by the alleged cruelty of their captain (Source: BBC).
