On January 10,1946, the first meeting of the U.N. General Assembly in London.
On January 11, 1935, Amelia Earhart started her first solo flight from Hawaii to California, the first woman to do so.
On January 12, 1991, U.S. Congress voted to authorize military force to expel Iraq from Kuwait.
On January 14, 2009, an airliner took off from New York and hit a flock of geese, disabling both engines. Pilot Chesley Sullenberger ditched the plane in the Hudson River and all aboard survived. This event has been credited as leading to “Twitter’s defining moment.”
On January 15, 1967, the first Superbowl football game was played in Los Angeles. The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.
On January 16, 1920, Prohibition began.
