"I Have A Dream"

West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyer Kelly V. Landers recalls events of historical significance that occurred this week in past years.

On August 24, 1932, Amelia Earhart made the first nonstop flight across the United States by a female pilot.

On August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Florida as a Category 5 Hurricane.

On August 26, 1961, Clarence Gideon was sentenced to the maximum penalty of five years for breaking and entering the Bay Harbor Poolroom, a felony, and misdemeanor theft of coins from the cigarette machine and jukebox, wine and beer.  This was later reversed as no counsel was provided and subsequently the Public Defender system was created.

On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech at the civil rights March on Washington.

On August August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, devastating New Orleans and much of the US Gulf Coast.
