On  January 26, 1971, Charles Manson was given the death sentence for conspiracy to commit murder. His death was automatically commuted to life imprisonment when California got rid of the death penalty.

On January 26, 1947, Al Capone, 48, died of complications of syphilis.

On January 26, 1971, Charles Manson and three followers were convicted of murder in Los Angeles.

On January 27, 1967, three astronauts were killed when a fire erupted in the Apollo 1 rocket during a test and training exercise.

On January 28, 1986, NASA Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing all aboard.

On January 30, 1972, Bloody Sunday, 13 unarmed protesters were killed by British soldiers in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
