On March 18, 1963, Gideon v. Wainwright was decided, held: Assistance of Counsel is a fundamental right essential to a fair trial; Clarence Gideon’s conviction was reversed and with the assistance of counsel was ultimately found not guilty.
On March 19, 1891, the 14th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court Earl Warren was born.
On March 21, 1963, Alcatraz federal penitentiary closed.
