Iwo Jima Memorial at Sunset

On February 23, 1945, Joe Rosenthal photographs 5 U.S. Marines and a Navy corpsman raising a flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima, among the most famous photos ever made.

On February 24, 1868, the U.S. House of Representatives impeaches President Andrew Johnson.  He was later acquitted.

On February 26, 1993, a truck bomb explodes in the parking garage of the World Trade Center, killing six people and injuring 1,042.

On February 27, 1973, the American Indian Movement takes over Wounded Knee, South Dakota, leading to a 71-day standoff.

On February 28, 1993, U.S. Federal agents attempt to raid the Waco, Texas compound of the Branch Davidian Church, leading to a 51-day standoff.

On March 1, 1875, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act.  However, it was not enforced, and the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional in 1883.

On March 1, 2005, Roper v. Simmons, S.Ct. 03-633 was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court, holding the death penalty unconstitutional for juveniles.
