On October 12, 2000 suicide bombers attack the US Navy destroyer USS Cole in a Yemeni port, blowing a hole in the hull and killing 17 sailors.
On October 13, 1792, the cornerstone of the White House was laid in Washington, D.C.
On October 16, 1859 Abolitionist John Brown leads a raid on a federal arsenal in Harper’s Ferry, Viriginia, hoping to start a slave revolt. He is arrested two days later and is hanged.
On October 16, 1962 U.S. President John F. Kennedy was informed that spy photographs revealed the construction of nuclear missile bases in Cuba, starting the Cuban Missile Crisis.
On October 17, 1931 American gangster Al Capone, known as “Scarface” and “Public Enemy #1,” was convicted of income tax evasion.
