This Week in History – The Scottsboro Boys Case

On November 4, 2008, the first African-American President, Barack H. Obama, was elected.
On November 5, 1872, Susan B. Anthony and other woman suffragists defied federal law and voted in Rochester, New York. Anthony was later arrested, convicted, and fined $100.
On November 7, 1932, Powell v. Alabama, S.Ct. Nos. 98, “The Scottsboro Boys” case: due process required timely appointment of counsel in capital cases. This case, more than any other event in the South during the 1930s, revealed the barbarous treatment of blacks. The case is now widely considered a miscarriage of justice, particularly highlighted by use of all-white juries.
On November 7, 1916, Jeanette Rankin (R-MT) became the first woman elected to the House of Representatives.
On November 7, 1944, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was re-elected to an unprecedented fourth term as President.
