On July 10, 1925, the Scopes “Monkey” trial with substitute teacher John Scopes accused of teaching scientific evolution in school, began in Tennessee. The case was seen as both a theological contest and a trial on whether modern science regarding the creation-evolution controversy should be taught in schools
On July 11, 1960, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird was published. To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America.
