On September 8, 1974, U.S. President Gerald Ford issued a blanket pardon to former president Richard Nixon for the Watergate scandal.
On September 11, Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. Patriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year, designated in memory of those killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
On September 11, 2001, two hijacked airliners crashed into the World Trade Center, destroying it, a third strikes the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania — in a coordinated terrorist attack killing over 3,000.
On September 12, 1977, South African anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko died in police custody, causing outrage and drawing attention to the racial struggles.
On September 13, 1899, in New York City, Henry Bliss was struck and killed by a taxicab, in the first fatal auto accident in the United States.
